MATT MALTESE AT WARSAW CONCERTS WITH CORNELIA MURR
Review and Photos by Raymond Aponte
The space at Warsaw was packed with loyal fans of Mr. Maltese and although I hadn’t heard of him until a few weeks ago, I have to say I can now see the attraction and the obvious reasons the crowd was as eager as it was. This guy is good. Matt’s lyrical style as a singer songwriter deserves way more recognition to say the least. It would seem that this crowd has been following this person for quite a while as is shown when they all sing along to his songs.
The story that’s painted in Matt’s lyrics are at the same time sad and funny as he comically weaves into the lyrics phrases like “I feel like I’m part of a Rom-Com gone wrong”. How musically ironic is that along with something like “I love you so, he loves you too, you love us both, now our hearts are truly tangled”. He puts together lyrics as profound and tragic and funny like an artist puts paint on a canvas, with abandon and deep feelings and passion with a bit of sarcastic wit thrown in for good measure. What is created is something that touches the listener deeply and strips them down to their most intimate and heartfelt sentiments. It is said that Matt’s lyrics are a medicine for the broken heart. If a writer writes from experience, then this lad has his share for sure.
Songs like “Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow” speaks volumes about the hopes of a lost love and what one will put up with to have that moment where you can be with that lost love no matter the cost, no matter how fleeting the moment.
I have to say that after this concert I was left feeling melancholic but quite hopeful for the world that can latch onto the feelings that Matt’s songs invoke. I mean who doesn’t want a bit of heartache to laugh at and look forward to the next heartbreak with anticipation while holding back a secret chuckle. This was truly an enjoyable concert and I’m glad to have discovered
this talented young man.
The opener this evening at Warsaw was Cornelia Murr. This young lady held the audience captive with her ethereal vocals and lyrics that delved deep into the human condition. Her vocals weaved a mystical and immersive experience with lyrics that were both personal and expansive.
