Green Day, the group that led the pop/punk revival thirty years ago with the release of their breakout success, “Dookie”, performed to an overflow crowd at Good Morning America Summer Concert Series on July 26th. The band announced the release of their new album, “Savior” and sang “Bobby Sox”, their most recent hit from the album. Green Day announced that New York City is the first stop on their worldwide tour and the audience could not have been more enthusiastic and “in sync” with the group. They sang every word of every song performed, hands in the air, swaying back and forth in co-ordinated rhythm with the band. Green Day has featured Tre Cool on drums, Mike Dirnt, on guitar and Bille Joe Armstrong on lead vocals since the 90’s without any changes or dramatic breakups.
The group performed its classic, “Basket Case” from “Dookie”. They also sang “Holiday” and “American Idiot” the title track of the album of the same name that was released twenty years ago. At that time, “American Idiot” recharged the group’s popularity selling more than 14 million copies. “American Idiot” was transformed into a successful Broadway rock opera of the same name.
They have steadily produced fourteen studio albums, selling more than seventy-five million records worldwide. In 2015, Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The fans immediate and “over the top” reception to Green Day, proved that thirty years later, they are talented, seasoned and still extraordinarily creative.
