The Menzingers, Daddy Issues and Tiny Moving Parts

The Menzingers with Daddy Issues and Tiny Moving Parts

Phoenix Concert Theatre

Toronto, Canada

November 17, 2018

Three bands, with Nashville-based Daddy Issues leading things off.

Jenna Moynihan (guitar and vocals), Jenna Mitchell (bass), and Emily Maxwell (drums) put on an engaging, but short set.  Good stage presence from all three.

Next up was Minnesota-based trio, Tiny Moving Parts. Brothers Matt and Billy Chevalier (bass and drums, respectively) and their cousin Dylan Mattheisen (vocals/guitar) have been together for ten years. They put on a spirited set; the rail was filled with amateur vocalists who knew not only all of the words, but every nuance of their delivery. Their energy reminded me of my own mosh pit memories of seeing Green Day tour behind “Dookie” 25 years ago.

The Menzingers Greg Barnett and Tom May on vocals & guitar, Eric Keen on bass, and Joe Godino on drums) are on the same record label as Green Day. Epitaph Records is home to so many of my personal favorites (Bad Religion, Rancid, The Offspring, NOFX and more). They live up to that standard in both sound and intensity. I might not know the songs or the words, but I recognized the fervor that created a frenzied audience (and I say, ‘frenzy’ in a most positive way).
