Sammy Hagar Birthday Bash

One of the Hardest tickets to get every year is one to the Sammy Hagar Birthday Bash. Held at the Cabo Wabo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, this is his 28th year celebrating his birthday with his fans, in paradise. You just can’t buy them, you have to win them. A lottery you have to enter. Ten of thousands try every year, but only 400 very lucky people can get into a show. I was there for two out of the four shows this year. For a lot of us redheads (a Sammy Hagar super fan) its not just a show, it’s a way of life. With a drink in your hand. and your feet in the sand, it is hard not to be happy. I meet people from Australia, Canada, and the UK. So coming from Jersey didn’t seem so big.

When you walk into the Cantina you immediately see photos of rock stars that have played there. That is another bonus, of getting in. Your mind wanders of who might join him on stage. For the past couple years. Sammy’s band –

The Circle has played there. The Circle includes Michael Anthony on Bass. Vic Johnson on guitar, and Jason Bonham on drums. This band plays Sammy’s Four Decades of hits.  His time in Montrose, Solo Material, Van Halen, Chickenfoot, and Led Zeppelin. Will Be played at any time, and every show is different. This years guests for the bash. Were Jerry Cantrell, Toby Keith, Kevin Cronin. Jerry was not at my two shows.

Sammy is now 71 years old. He can sing and move like he is in his twenty’s. In his words he will do this as long as they keep coming. There seems to be no slowing down. As The Circle will release its first album next year of new material as a band. Taking photos and drinking Mas Tequila at the same time, Isn’t recommended. I tried to capture what its like being at one of these shows. The pure happiness on their faces, I think says it all. I know my smile is still  there, days after. I’ll leave you with some words from a VH song.

How do I know when it’s love

I can’t tell you but it lasts forever

How does it feel when it’s love

It’s just something you feel together
