Nickelback put on one hell of a show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion in The Woodlands, Texas on July 23, 2023.
They opened the show with the first track of their new album, “San Quentin,” which is one of my personal favorite Nickelback songs.
“They’d try to cancel us if we put this song out now,” said Chad Kroeger, frontman of the band, before playing Nickelback classic, “Figured You Out.” The crowd erupted into cheers after realizing what song Kroeger was referring to.
Around halfway through the set, Nickelback brought their opening acts, Josh Ross and Brantley Gilbert, back out on stage to play a cover song. “Within two seconds of hearing the intro to this song you’re either going to know it or you’re not,” said Kroeger moments before the very distinctive intro to “Copperhead Road” by Steve Earl kicked in.
“Depending on what generation you’re from, this song may mean something very different for you,” joked Kroeger before “Photograph.” He says this at every show in reference to a meme surrounding the song that was popular some years ago.
Before playing “Rockstar,” Nickelback invites a fan on stage to sing it with them, its a little tradition of theirs. The fan at this show, Heather, absolutely killed it. Even Kroeger complimented their vocals. Well done, Heather!
They closed the show with a heavier Nickelback song, “Burn it to the Ground.”
Overall Nickelback put on a really incredible show. The vocals were on point, the band was tight, the visuals were interesting, and the fans were amazing.
Over and over again, Kroeger gushed over how much he loved Houston and Texans eat that kinda thing up. I just hope Nickelback loved Houston as much as Houston loved Nickelback. I’ll be sure to catch them again next time they’re in my area. Until then, Nickelback…
