Mr.Big -Starland Ballroom-Sayreville, NJ February 2nd 2024
It was summertime in the early 90’s-I’m in the Great Arena at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. I’m with my two childhood friends -Adam and Joe. We are here waiting to see a rock concert.
On the bill that night is the headliner, Mr.Big, with two supporting acts-Hardline and the Electric Boys. What we didn’t know was the legendary night that awaited us.
The Electric Boys came out and the first thing the lead singer said was. “We are going to play for a long time tonight” They played three songs, but it was the greatest three song performance I’ve ever witnessed.
Next was Hardline which included the great guitarist Neil Schon from the band Journey. They only played their debut album “Double Eclipse”. My friends and I. Didn’t have the album. But the next day we all owned it. It truly was an epic performance.
Then came the headliner Mr.Big. Fronted by Eric Martin,Billy Sheehan on bass, Paul Gilbert on guitar and Pat Torpey on drums. The boys were supporting their latest album “Lean into it” which was probably the name of the tour, but not sure. They came out and absolutely blew everyone away. I remember on several occasions turning to my friends and saying this is awesome. It truly was a great night.
Fast forward thirty plus years and I’m still in New Jersey. But tonight I’m in Sayreville at the Starland Ballroom to see “The BIG Finish 2024 tour” featuring Mr.Big. I was so excited when I heard about this tour announcement last year. There was no way I was missing it.
The boys came out and immediately, I was transported back to the magical summer night. “Addicted to that rush” was the opener and what a way to kick off the night. The guys would go on playing the whole “Lean into it” album. They eventually played a 21 song set list that also included a number of great covers. On drums for this tour is Nick D’Virgilio-filling in for the late great Pat Torpey who passed away in 2018.
I hope the pictures I captured, bring you into the Starland Ballroom. Paul and Billy are true icons on their instruments. Eric’s vocals are still amazing-singing all those awesome hits. Every one in that venue left with a “BIG” smile on their face!
