There are concerts and there are concerts. This one was one of the most polished productions I have ever attended! Lionel Richie and Earth Wind and Fire returned to the Chicago stage this past Saturday evening and fans took notice, completely selling out the cavernous United Center near the city’s downtown. The lines to enter the parking lots were long and entry inside equally so.

Earth Wind and Fire opened with Shining Star and moved quickly through their 19 song set in quick succession, pausing briefly to introduce and note the three longtime members. Verdine White (bass), Philip Bailey (vocals) and Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion). All three had been with EWF for over 50 years.

Their set included “Let Your Feelings Show”, “That’s The Way of The World”, “After The Love Is Gone” and their rendition of the Beatles’ “Got To Get You Into My Life”. This band is tight, sounds great and everyone moves with choreographed precision. The multi-generational crowd went to their feet as soon as the lights dimmed and did not sit again until the band left the stage.

A brief break and Lionel Richie took to the stage to cheers and as the lights illuminated the stage, Lionel opening with “Hello”. I glanced around and found it difficult to see anyone not singing along! His voice is solid, his personality magnetic. Every song, whether from his solo career or from his days with the Commodores evokes memories. The lady sitting next to me had tears in her eyes the entire performance! I’m sure she wasn’t the only one.

The evening’s selections included “Dancing On The Ceiling”, Three Times a Lady, We Are The World and concluding with “All Night Long” Twenty songs in all, and it was over in what seemed was a blink of an eye. This twenty city tour began several days before so there should be opportunities to catch it during the remaining dates! I strongly recommend you do so when they stop in your town!
