Veteran producer, prolific songwriter, arranger and performer, Joe Louis Walker passed away on April 30, 2025. He was a musician known for his electric rock style but seamlessly shifted among the blues, rock, soul and gospel genres. He was a man with many honors (4x Blues Music Award Winner – nominated 52 times) and is a Blues Hall of Fame inductee. I interviewed Joe about growing up in San Francisco in the 60’s, playing at The Filmore as a teenager and about his influences, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Bobby Womack, Otis, Thelonious Monk, Willie Dixon and John Mayall, Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Jimi Hendrix, all of whom he performed with. In our interview, we spoke about one of his most celebrated performances at the Kennedy Center in 1995 when he performed his famous “Rock Me Baby” melody, together with Dr. John and Etta James, a tribute to Honoree B B King. It is an understatement to say that JLW was a prolific musician. It was a privilege to meet him again and photographed his record release party at The Cutting Room on November 18, 2021, celebrating his 27th album, “Electric Electric”. At last count, he had released more than 30 albums. That night, the energy in the room was indeed “electric” as Joe performed new songs as well as some old favorites. Before “Electric Electric” I reviewed the release of “Blues Coming On”, a collaboration of JLW and the “whos whos” of the blues music: Dion DiMucci (who wrote the title track), Mitch Ryder, Jorma Kaukonen, Eric Gales, John Sebastian, Carla Cooke, David Bromberg, Albert Lee and Keb Mo, just to name a few.

Joe Louis Walker, the man with “the soul of a blues musician”, peacefully passed away with his wife and children by his side. RIP Joe Louis Walker.
