Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones performed at City Winery in NYC tonite, August 27, 2024 and what a fantastic show it was! It is always something special to get to hear the music of icons. It was also fun to hear their stories and jokes. One of Alvin’s was about how he wrote a now standard zydeco song in California. One of Gilmore’s was how his wife, Janet Gilmore, discovered a song that he recorded courtesy of Buddy Holly’s parents and had been tucked away in a forgotten box.
Many of the songs they played are on their great new album, Borderland. The Guilty Ones who played behind Glimore and Alvin are only guilty of great music. Guitarist Chris Miller, bass player, Brad Fordham, and drummer Lisa Pankratz seemingly effortlessly created exciting music throughout the entire night. It was fun to watch them all riff off each other creating compelling, interesting music. The stories, the friendships and the music made you feel like you were one of the group. What a wonderful night!
